UK born, New Zealand based Maxwell Monika, known for his expressive drum and bass on noted labels such as Shogun Audio, Spearhead Records and Fokuz Recordings, is announcing the release of his highly anticipated EP ‘Unique Outcomes’, on Spearhead Records, following up from his popular Radio People EP back in November 2023.
Scheduled for release late March 2024, Unique Outcomes showcases Monika’s ability to flit between deep, soulful sounds and techy steppers, taking influence from the expansive underground UK and New Zealand club scenes.

March 1st sees the release of the single ‘Suited Me’ with Phoebe Freya, the superbly talented drum and bass singer from the UK. Monika writes:

”This track came about pretty naturally. I started off playing around with my new plugin Diva, and made a nice instrumental. But I thought it could be elevated with a vocal, so I reached out to Phoebe. I'd heard her stuff on tracks with folks like Sustance and Etherwood and thought I'd chance it. Luckily she was keen, which was a wicked surprise! And she absolutely smashed it!”
Outside of producing music, Monika is studying to become a counsellor in New Zealand. In this EP, he wanted to bring an element of this into his creative flow. Monika writes:

“‘Unique Outcomes’ is a phrase used in my counselling study.
It's about listening to a person's story, which might be full of self-doubt and unhappiness, and finding the little nugget of gold within that story that actually highlights their strength.
For example, a person who's super depressed and drinking loads might be drinking to self-medicate, so therefore thinks that there is something within themself that is worth shielding from the depression. It's a really cool way of looking at how people suffer, and I wanted to bring an element of my study into my music”
Alongside these tracks, Monika showcases his techier side with the collaboration ‘Function And Design’, alongside Tellus. Monika writes:

“Tellus came to me with an idea for an Marcus Intalex inspired track, and I convinced him to let me have a go playing with it. I let my heavier side come out, resulting in a chunky, bass-driven track. The name ‘Function And Design’ denotes simply the utilitarian nature of the track, music crafted specifically to be used in clubs for dancing and head-bopping’
