invites Balera
With performances at Boiler Room Barcelona, Lollapalooza Brazil, and Whole Festival on his résumé, Rafa Balera is a powerhouse in constant evolution and one of the leading references for Black and queer artists in Brazil’s electronic music scene. A prominent figure in Brazilian nightlife, Rafa sees his art as more than entertainment—it is also a form of resistance, representation, and cultural expression. Born in Diadema, São Paulo, Rafa Balera first stepped into a DJ booth in 2012 after being invited by a friend to play at Aloca, the iconic underground club that served as a sanctuary for São Paulo’s LGBTQIA+ community between 1994 and 2017. What began as a spontaneous experience quickly became a passion, leading him to build a remarkable career rooted in nightlife culture and music. Today, Rafa Balera is recognized as one of the most influential names in Brazil’s alternative music scene. He describes his sound as a vibrant fusion of house, funk, disco, and saucy grooves, creating energetic and emotionally charged dancefloor experiences. Over the years, Rafa has performed at some of Brazil’s most respected clubs, collectives, and cultural spaces, including Baixo Augusta venues, Batekoo, Selvagem, Novo Affair, Jerome, Edifício Martinelli, and Ephigênia. He has shared lineups with acclaimed artists such as DJ Marky, Josh Caffe, Mu540, and Diplo. His festival appearances include major events such as Lollapalooza Brazil and Coala Festival, alongside international performances at Whole Festival in Europe. Rafa has also been featured on renowned music platforms including Na Manteiga and Hör, and proudly counts a Boiler Room Barcelona set among his career highlights. His artistic influences draw heavily from Black music pioneers and cultural icons such as Honey Dijon, Billy Porter, DJ Marky, Josh Caffe, Carl Cox, Cajmere, and Sade. "What inspires me most about these artists is their journey—the resilience, dedication, and perseverance that shaped their careers, often in the face of prejudice and exclusion," says Rafa. "I see myself harvesting the results of my work, even if later than many others, because the path I walk as a Black and queer artist is often far more challenging than that of white and Eurocentric artists." For Rafa Balera, music is more than a soundtrack for celebration—it is a powerful tool for visibility, resistance, and transformation. Despite the challenges, he continues to expand his presence and impact, solidifying his place not only within Brazil’s nightlife scene but also on the international stage.
