For a glimpse into the mentality behind seminal drum & bass label Metalheadz, look no further than the iconic robotic face that’s remained its motif since it was established nearly 20 years ago: an urge to explore futuristic music that connects human bodies with the synthetic pulse of technology. Founded in 1994 by d&b pioneer Goldie and Kemistry & Storm, its release schedule has remained true to that ethos, from seminal work by artists like Photek, Dillinja, Ed Rush & Optical, Commix and Source Direct, to newer producers such as Ulterior Motive and boundary-blurrers like Om Unit.
“Drum & Bass is one of the most innovative and forward thinking of music genres,” says label manager Jon. “For us, [Metalheadz] is about pushing the boundaries, putting out the most incredible music we can, music that really illustrates the true possibilities of the genres we represent.”
True to form, their Rinse FM show is a fluid entity, finding them inviting different DJs along each month for sessions that are never quite the same twice. “You will never truly know what to expect unless you tune in,” emphasises Jon. “One week we may look back twenty years at the history of the music, the next week we may be looking twenty years forward. We will have shows that showcase the more soulful side, or we may have music that wants you to smash your room up! This music is like modern day jazz – it can encapsulate any other music style and make it its own, that’s the beauty of what we do.”
