“I just play music,” declares Crises. “It’s my therapeutic approach to it that allows me to play different stuff and not feel like I have to say this, or define that. When we talk about music, I can’t help but relate it to life. So if someone says ‘Why don’t you pinpoint your musical genre?’, I just say ‘How do you pinpoint life?’”
Instead, his ear for music is attuned more to shared atmosphere. On his show, which takes place every Tuesday, you’re likely to hear dub and reggae rub shoulders with dubstep and garage, with the only constant being a deep and meditational edge. That extends to the output of his record label – appropriately named Mindstep – and the nights he runs under the same name.
“One thing that’s consistent throughout the music that I play,” he explains, “even though it might fit into different genres, is the vibe of it and the mindfulness of it. There’s a lot of ambient sounds within the tunes that I play, and I love it.” He pauses momentarily, and grins. “Ambient is the only genre that doesn’t belong to any bpm.”
Crises started his show on Rinse in 2007, after sending in a demo to the station. “My first show was the same week I graduated from uni,” he remembers. “It’s a big thing for me, I’ve always wanted to be on Rinse FM, since I was young. It was so close but it seemed so far as a child.” Having grown up in the local area, he used to tape shows off the radio while he was at school. “It was always Pay As U Go’s shows on Sundays – people would record them off Rinse and people would rent them out to friends!”
